What is leather wrapping?

Leather wrapping on a hard surface is a technique of applying leather directly onto a rigid surface such as wood, plywood or metal, rather than soft-wrapping it over a layer of foam padding. This method preserves the crisp, defined form of the frame, creating a seamless, refined and highly sculptural surface.

Unlike conventional soft upholstery (wrapping over foam padding), hard-surface leather wrapping allows almost no room to cover up or correct mistakes. Every leather detail must be treated, aligned and stretched perfectly flat, giving the work a high aesthetic and technical value.

Difficulty and technical requirements

The hard-surface leather technique is regarded as one of the most challenging stages in the production of premium handcrafted furniture:

• High precision: With no foam layer to conceal anything, the leather must hug the wooden or metal frame perfectly, with no ripples or blisters.

• Leather preparation: Genuine leather must be selected for its thickness and elasticity. Before wrapping, the leather is usually stretched, moisturized or heat-treated to ensure a tight fit.

• Edges & curved corners: This is the hardest part. The craftsperson must know how to cut, score, sew or conceal the seams precisely so the leather wraps fully around curves and corners without any creases.

• Combining joinery & leather: The wooden frame needs to be designed with dedicated grooves and channels to secure the leather. The craftsperson must understand joinery construction while also mastering the leather-wrapping technique.
